Baby Signing - What are the benefits?
Earlier communication can provide psychological benefits, such as enhanced confidence and self-esteem. Babies and children feel better about themselves when they are able to effectively communicate with the people around them. Parents also feel more confident if they are able to meet their child's needs and desires.
Baby sign language — when babies use modified gestures from British Sign Language — can be an effective communication tool. ... Limited research suggests that baby sign language might give a typically developing child a way to communicate several months earlier than those who only use vocal communication.
Some babies can learn simple signs as young as 6 months. But your baby may not have the hand control to be able to sign back to you until she's 8 or 9 months old.You can start teaching signs to your baby when you think she's ready – even if she can't sign back yet.
Existing research suggests that there may be benefits to teaching signing to hearing infants who have not yet developed vocal communication. ... This recommendation is supported by studies showing that infants exposed to sign language acquired first signs at an earlier age than typical first spoken words.
Baby sign promotes communication before a child is able to verbally communicate with others. Since gestures are part of normal speech, teaching baby sign allows infants to learn an aspect of communication that is used with language.
Research (and experience) has shown that babies who learn sign usually speak sooner then their peers. It can also be used to help get a non-verbal child into communicating.
